About Us

Welcome to the Taupō Islamic Centre

In the heart of New Zealand’s Central North Island lies Taupō, a town of breathtaking beauty, cultural richness, and now—spiritual connection. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, geothermal wonders, and set at the outlet of Lake Taupō—the country’s largest lake—this thriving community of over 33,000 residents has long been a destination for both adventure and reflection.

For many years, Taupō’s growing Muslim population prayed under open skies, taking wudu at the lake and performing salah on its shores. That quiet resilience gave birth to the Taupō Islamic Centre—a place of worship, community, and hope.

Our Centre

Located at 57 Kaimanawa Road, the Taupō Islamic Centre serves as the spiritual home for local Muslims and travellers alike. As the southernmost masjid on State Highway 1 before Wellington, it welcomes guests from across New Zealand and around the world—becoming a cherished stop for many on their journey.

What began in 2015 as a modest prayer space for a few families has transformed into a vibrant hub for faith, learning, and outreach.

Vision & Purpose

At its core, the Taupō Islamic Centre is a sanctuary of worship and fellowship. The Centre aims to:

  • Provide a dedicated space for daily prayers and Jumu’ah services
  • Offer educational and spiritual guidance through classes and community programmes
  • Foster unity across faiths and cultures through open dialogue and inter-community events
  • Support visitors, families, and youth groups seeking a place to gather, pray, and connect

A New Chapter

To meet the needs of a growing congregation, plans are underway to develop a purpose-built two-story mosque that will feature:

– A large prayer hall
– A library and dedicated classroom spaces
– A janaazah facility for funeral preparations

This new structure will not only accommodate more worshippers but also enhance the Centre’s role as a spiritual and educational beacon in Taupō.

Be Part of the Journey

The Taupō Islamic Centre has submitted a resource consent application to the Taupō District Council, and the proposal is now open for public consultation. We invite the local community to learn more, share their views, and support our vision for a welcoming, inclusive space.

To bring this vision to life, the Taupō Islamic Educational and Welfare Trust is actively seeking donations. Your support—no matter the amount—will help build a legacy for future generations.

A Spiritual Destination

Our central location, with amazing access to nature’s amenities, makes the Taupō Islamic Centre a world-class location to connect with Allah and nature. From local Tūwharetoa iwi members to visiting Muslims from China, Fiji, India, and beyond—this Centre has become a shared symbol of unity and peace.

Whether you are visiting Taupō, passing through State Highway 1, or seeking to support a growing faith community, we warmly welcome you to our Centre.
